Class 3: Autumn 1
For our first novel study of the new academic year, we chose The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave.
When Isabella's friend disappears, she volunteers to guide the search party. As a mapmaker's daughter, she's equipped with elaborate ink maps and knowledge of the stars, eager to navigate the island's forgotten heart. But beneath the mountains a legendary fire demon awakens, and her journey is fraught with danger ...
Our English writing this half-term centered around the themes and events of the book. Amongst other activities, we learnt about and wrote our own version of the myth at the heart of the novel; we studied the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and created suspenseful fiction related to the myth; and we dramatised sections of the story and turned our drama into play-scripts.
Midsummer Night's Dream
As part of our English, we were very fortunate to be able to go to Sheffield to watch an unabridged staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream. As well as learning all about the characters and story in the run up to the trip, when we came back we also wrote our own recounts of Bottom's story, from his point of view and in the style of Shakespeare.
Sport: Football and Triathalon
This half-term's inter-school tournament was football. Class 3 entered three teams: a Year 6 boys team, a Year 5 boys team and a Year 5 and 6 girls team. Each team gave their all and did the school proud both with their attitude on the pitch and off the pitch too. The girl team particularly excelled against the larger school and finished a very creditable 3rd in their group.
Class 3, along with some of Class 2, were also very fortunate to be invited again to the Brownlee Triathalon Meet in October, were we had the chance to swim, cycle and run our way around a specially designed triathalon course.
