Spelling in Class 3

In Class 3, we use a structured and proven approach to help our children become confident, accurate spellers. Our weekly lessons focus on both spelling rules and essential everyday vocabulary. 

Read Write Inc. Spelling

We use the Read Write Inc. spelling programme to build strong foundational skills. Because Class 3 is a mixed-age group, we tailor our lessons specifically to each year group's curriculum: 

• Year 5 pupils follow the dedicated Year 5 Read Write Inc. spelling pathway.
• Year 6 pupils follow the dedicated Year 6 Read Write Inc. spelling pathway. 

This ensures every child learns the exact spelling patterns and rules required for their age group.

Common Exception Words

Alongside our main programme, we place a strong focus on Common Exception Words (words that do not follow standard spelling rules). 

To ensure these words are truly mastered, our approach includes:

• Current Learning: Dedicated lesson time focused on the specific word lists for Year 5 and Year 6.
• Continuous Retrieval: Regular look-backs at spelling lists from previous year groups to refresh memory and embed long-term learning.
