Class 1

Welcome to Class 1 - Year 1 and Year 2

Mr Vincent is the named teacher and is supported by Teaching and Learning Assistant Mrs Houghton.

Our topic this term is 'Childhood'.  In this 'Childhood' project your child will learn words and phrases related to the passage of time. They will explore artefacts to help them to understand childhood in the past and how childhood has changed over time. They will explore the six stages of life and explore timelines and family trees. Everyday life in the 1950s will be explored, including shopping, transport, family life and childhood. They will also learn about the significance of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953 by studying photographs and online sources. The children will use maps to explore how places have changed over time and highlight any similarities or differences between childhood today and childhood in the 1950s.

Maths

This term's focus will be place value, addition, subtraction and geometry (focusing on shape). Each Monday and Friday we will be working hard with our Beat That Maths.

English

Storybook Lessons:

We follow the Read Write Inc phonic scheme where children read storybooks that are closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge. The storybooks consist of green words (words that can be sounded out), red word (words that are not decodable) and challenge words to extend vocabulary.  Activities such as comprehension questions, partner discussion and writing activities are based around the storybooks children read in class.

Reading

Children are encouraged to read on a daily basis both in school and at home. In school they will read with their reading partner, with the teacher and independently using their class storybook. At home children are encouraged to read using their home reading scheme book and to record their reading in the home reading record book. Home reading books are changed every Tuesday and Thursday. Please note that an adult in school may not always listen to your children reading from their home reading book so we do really value your comments on the progress they are making.

PE

Year 1 and Year 2  have PE on a Wednesday afternoon.

Homework

Homework, when given, is sent home on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Throughout each day we take part in fun activities such as the Daily Mile and Go Noodle.
