Class 1

Welcome to Class 1.

We are looking forward to working hard, having fun and learning lots of new things.

Class 1's Teachers: Miss Marsh, Mrs Houghton, Miss McVeigh

Maths

Our Maths themes this half term for our Y1 children are Shape, space and measure. Our Maths themes for our Y2 children are: Properties of shape & Fractions. In addition, we also use TT Rock Stars which can be accessed from home and is a fun way to learn and improve their times tables knowledge and My Maths work which is set weekly to sharpen skills the children are learning in class. The link for both sites can be found on the maths page.

English

Y1 - Storybook Lessons: We follow the Read Write Inc phonic scheme where children read storybooks that are closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge. The storybooks consist of green words (words that can be sounded out), red word (words that are not decodable) and challenge words to extend vocabulary.  Activities such as comprehension questions, partner discussion and writing activities are based around the storybooks children read in class.

Y2 - This half term we are writing non - chronological reports. Our grammar themes this half term are capital letters, full stops, main clauses, co-ordinating conjunctions (and, or, but), exclamation marks, question marks and progressive verbs.

Reading

Through a number of activities and the Read, Write, Inc. scheme, all children in Class 1 read on a daily basis in school. They read with their reading partner, with the teacher, parent helpers, and independently using their class storybooks, topic books and other appropriate texts.

Our Y2 children will also have a daily reading session to prepare them for this years statutory testing. Each session will guide the children through different question types and teach them skills to answer questions fully.

At home children are encouraged to read every day using their home reading scheme book and to record their reading in their reading diary.  Please note that an adult in school may not always listen to your children reading from their home reading book so we do really value your comments on the progress they are making.

Spelling

Children will continue to learn the statutory spellings for KS1 and have a daily Read, Write Inc spelling lesson.

PE

Class 1 will have PE on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has the correct kit for these days.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday. Each week, children will have a Maths and English piece to complete in their homework book.

For further topic information please see the class Topic page.

Throughout each day we will also be taking part in fun activities such as the Daily Mile and Go Noodle which the children enjoy.

If you have any questions please speak to us at the end of the day or contact us at school.
