Science Intent, Implementation and Impact. April 2020
Introduction.
In studying science in school, we are hoping to encourage awe and wonder about the world and universe around us. In creating an enquiring mind, we will then aim to begin answering and exploring a range of scientific questions within the realms of biology, chemistry and physics.
Intent:
To create a greater understanding of the world around us, the plants and animals that inhabit it and the universe within which it is found.
Pupils will acquire accumulative knowledge, skills and concepts within the scientific genres.
Pupils will have a deeper understanding of the abstract concepts of science.
Pupils will be able to hypothesise, investigate and record conclusions and findings of scientific enquiries.
Implementation.
Pupils will be taught the key scientific topics outlined in the curriculum and detailed on the school long term plan.
The teaching of these topics will be supported by Hamilton mixed year science lessons.
Pupils will have the opportunity to work scientifically using the WeDo lego scheme.
Pupils will have the opportunity to work scientifically using a range of science resources.
Lessons will build on previous years content and knowledge to show progress through school.
Investigations will build on previously acquired skills to show progress through school.
Vocabulary for each topic will be displayed and explicitly taught to pupils and where appropriate be included on the Class Word Web.
Children will be taught the value of failure and learning from mistakes in order to make scientific progress in line with the development of Growth Mind sets.
Impact.
Children will be able to carry out investigations safely and fairly.
Pupils will be able to see and record their own successes and learn from their mistakes.
Teachers will assess children’s progress using end of unit assessments and Maestro assessment grids.
Pupils will be greater prepared for end of KS2 Science sample tests.
Children’s science inquiries will be celebrated on the school website.
Science investigation in Class 3. Light and shadows.
